So during my 30 Bags in 30 Day series I had mentioned that I had found a certain sewing book and that I would have some projects coming from it. Probably 3 or 4 years ago I bought Amy Butler's Little Stitches for Little Ones thinking that someday I would make my baby's crib bedding. haha. That is hilarious thinking about it now because there is no way I could have made crib bedding in the fabrics I wanted for under $200 most likely.
This book has LOTS of fun cute projects that are fairly modern in style - which I love!!! There is everything from diaper bags, clothes, room decor, toys, and organizing necessities that come with having a baby. I decided I would try one of the "easier" projects for a friend's baby shower last weekend. So I decided on the pocket bibs with travel carrying case, so that way you can throw all your food items in a seperate bag within your diaper bag. Here is my finished product:
I'm not gonna lie - it was touch and go for a while there. I started with the Piggy Bib. On that project I did my very first embroidery (eyes and nostrils) with the help of my Grandma's advice. I got all the pieces cut, did my embroidery attached the stuffed snout to the pocket and then when it came to put it all together I had it all pinned with the dreaded BINDING.
If you look at the top edge of the piggy pocket you can see some binding - basically it's a fabrice strip that you fold and iron and then sew on top of it and all your raw edges to finish the project.
When I did the binding on the outside of the piggy it was AWFUL. I finished and it was all crooked and bunched and I was so furious I was ready to throw in the towel. My mom mentioned i should just sew it inside out and pull it through and I didn't listen much because I was so mad. But lying in bed that night I figured out how I could do that with the pocket and ears fully intact.
Once I undid all my binding a few days later I gave it another shot and ... IT WORKED! I then did and edging around the whole perimeter to still give it that finished "binding" look.
Piggy from start to finish took probably 6 hours. Yikes.
The second bib is the exact same as the piggy just without all the detailing and body parts. And since I knew what my limits were, I was able to whip up 3 of that second bib design in probably 2 hours.
The bag wasn't too difficult, just had to read the instructions carefully but I am super happy with how they all turned out. The piggy really is the cutest and I tried it out on Addy and it's even more adorable ON a baby since the ears flap out.
I also put some baby utensils and a dish in the bag to go with the gift for the full effect.
Not too shabby. I'm currently working on a pretty difficult project for myself. Since it's for myself I'm giving myself a little more grace than I did on the is project. Hopefully I will have it done in another week or so!
cute!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! I love making hand made stuff for baby showers - its so much more personal. And you are braver than me; I haven't done binding yet.
ReplyDeleteWell... I'm not sure you can say I've "done" binding either unless you count that tiny part on the piggy pocket lol... since I cheated :) haha.
